MEET THE COACHES - Ali Weir

Police advanced rider, advanced riding instructor, and National Crime Squad surveillance rider, Ali retired from duty this year, after 28 years professional riding and over one million operational miles covered.

Riding bikes has been something I have done professionally my whole life. I served as a police officer in the Hampshire police and passed my standard bike course in 1979. The advanced course followed two years later and in 1988 I became a police instructor for both bikes and cars at the Essex Police Driving School.  In that role I instructed police riders through standard, advanced courses and royal protection courses, all of which involved on and off-road riding.

In 1993 I joined an ‘In Force’ surveillance unit, and later the National Crime Squad and other government agencies. I spent 28 years as a permanent surveillance rider, and, over those 28 years, I covered over 1.2million miles.

For Ali, nothing beats a chat and sharing knowledge with fellow passionate riders.

As part of my coaching role with Rapid I have met some wonderful people and clients, and it has reminded me why I was hooked on motorcycling in the first place. There is nothing like the freedom of a bike and the road, the acceleration, the performance, and the adventures it can open up.

I keep my own standards high by riding with former colleagues and my fellow Rapid coaches - currently on a BMS S1000XR - and I am enthusiastic to pass on my skills and all of the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years. I think it’s important to pass them on to help keep riders safe, maximise their enjoyment, and also encourage them to ride more.
