RAPID ROADS - B6255

A third look at some of the Rapid Roads we use as part of our courses takes us to the Yorkshire Dales, specifically the B6255 from Ribbleshead Viaduct to Hawes.

Used as part of a coaching route that also features Buttertubs Pass, Tan Hill, and Devil’s Bridge, the run from Ribbleshead Viaduct to Hawes is not only set in glorious countryside, it represents a great opportunity to practice reading the road, resulting a swift, smooth ride if done correctly.

While weekends can be busy, traffic conditions are usually light - though take care in summer for the odd tractor or motorhome - and the surface is also excellent.

Of course, subject to the volume of traffic and appropriate planning, this section allows the use of the entire road, allowing the off-side entry into left hand bends, and also the chance to straightline a series of bends, making for faster, more efficient progress.

The skills we are able to learn here are especially useful on wet roads, where being smooth and safe is paramount.

The B6255 can be stitched into a number of different routes around the Dales, with other excellent roads nearby, including the B6265, the A59, A684, and the B6451.
